DLNR Reschedules Public Meeting on Kokee/Waimea
Canyon State Park Master Plan and EIS to October 14

LIHUE — The Division of State Parks has rescheduled its second public information meeting on the Kokee/Waimea Canyon State Park master plan and EIS, on October 14, 2003 at the Lihue Neighborhood Center, 3353 Eono St. in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i, beginning at 5:30 p.m

The meeting was postponed from its original Sept. 30 date, to allow Kaua‘i residents to attend Governor Lingle's scheduled "Talk Story" session on the same evening.

The objectives for the meeting are to receive comments on three alternatives for the management of the two parks and to solicit the public's support for a preferred scheme that will set the direction for the parks development for the next 25 years.

"It is an exciting time for the interested public to become active participants in the master plan process," said DLNR Chairperson Peter Young.

"Some of the primary issues that will be part of the plan include resources conservation and enhancement, public recreation, the disposition of the recreational residences, existing water and sewage systems constraints, invasive species control, native species enhancement and revenue generation," said Young.

"These issues will form the basis for recommendations that will guide the long-range development of both parks. The recommendations will help us improve the daily operations and maintenance concerns associated with public recreational uses of the area," Young said.

From the public input, a preferred alternative will be recommended to the Board of Land and Natural Resources with implementing actions to carry out the plan's objectives.
