For Immediate Release: To Help At DLNR Native Garden
|
| HONOLULU— The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will hold the third of several work days being planned by its Division of Forestry and Wildlife to revitalize its community native Hawaiian garden, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday November 4, 2005 Volunteers, working with DLNR staff, will be planting a variety of native plants and working on the finishing touches of the garden restoration. “Native plants provide the habitat and food sources that forest birds, insects and snails, need to survive. Many of the species we will be planting were important to the Hawaiians for ceremonies, lei, medicines, religious uses, nourishment and adornment. This information is featured on the interpretive signs that will be placed in the garden on November 4.” said Young. The garden is located on the makai side of DLNR’s Kalanimoku state office building headquarters, at 1151 Punchbowl St across from the State Capitol. The Kalanimoku building is mauka of Honolulu Hale and the City’s renovated Mission Memorial Auditorium. Parking is available in the basement of the DLNR building through access on Punchbowl Street or Beretania. The garden presently includes naio, naupaka, and pohinahina. Volunteers will add to the native collection by planting native species such as ‘a‘ali‘i, pa‘u o Hi‘iaka, naiopapa, ‘ohi‘a lehua, alahe‘e, ‘ala ‘ala wai nui, palapalai, kupukupu, loulu native palm, Hibiscus brackenridgii, ha‘o, Hibiscus waimeae, kulu‘i (Notatrichium), ohi‘a, Munroeiodendron racemosum, Fimbristylis miliacea, Hibiscus St. Johnii, 'akia, nanu, and koki‘o ke‘oke‘ (native white Hibiscus).
