HONOLULU — In an effort to reach out to the public and make departmental activities and procedures more available and easily understood, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) recently started posting both Land Board and Water Commission agendas and submittals on the DLNR web site. The first agenda and set of submittals on the web site are for today's Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) meeting. Divisions submittals are requests for the Land Board and the Commission on Water Resource Management (CWRM) to consider and act on within the wide range of issues under their jurisdiction, from land lease decisions, Conservation District Use Permits, water use permits, stream channel alteration permits, to disciplinary actions and fines for violations. Submittals provide background information that BLNR and CWRM members consider prior to rendering a decision. "Previously, only a limited number of printed copies were made available for the public to preview BLNR and CWRM submittals," said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson. "This is part of our Administration's ongoing efforts to make it easier and more convenient for the public to interact with state government and to make information more accessible." "By making these agendas and division submittals available to the public, we are opening our doors for the public to participate in the decision-making process," said Young. "Hopefully, this new feature on our web site will also generate a greater diversity of opinions." For the Water Commission agendas and submittals, go to: http://www.hawaii.gov/dlnr/cwrm/agenda.htm Scroll down to the appropriate meeting date. Submittals are grouped together in PDF format. Click on the appropriate section and scroll or perform a key word search within the submittal to locate the item of interest. "Our plan is to have submittals and agendas for the BLNR and CWRM meetings posted a week prior to the actual meetings. That should give the public adequate time to prepare any testimony or displays to support the opinions they will bring before the board," concluded Young.
