DLNR Seeks Applicants to Serve on
Island Burial Councils

HONOLULU — The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is seeking applicants to serve as regional, or large property owner representatives on the Kaua‘i/Ni‘ihau, O‘ahu, Maui/Lana‘i, Moloka‘i, and Hawai‘i Island Burial Councils (IBC).

Duties of council members include, but are not limited to, the determination of preservation in place or relocation of previously identified native Hawaiian burial sites, as well as making recommendations to DLNR regarding appropriate management, treatment, and protection of native Hawaiian burials.

"We are seeking applications for council members," said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson. "In fulfilling their statutory mandates, the burial councils and their dedicated members play a critical role protecting native Hawaiian burials within their communities and on their island," he said.

Regional representatives are selected on the basis of their understanding of the culture, history, burial beliefs, customs, and practices of native Hawaiians. According to state historic preservation rules, the regions generally correspond to the traditional districts, such as Hamakua, ‘Ewa, Puna, and Ko‘olaupoko, for example.

Large property owner representatives must be employed by or associated with either a developer who conducts large scale land development activities, or a large property owner who owns or leases at least one hundred acres of land on the respective island, as well as represent the interests of development or large property owners or both.

Burial council members are appointed by the Governor and subject to confirmation by the State Senate.

For additional information and an application form, please visit the State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD) web site at www.hawaii.gov/dlnr/hpd/

Applications may also be obtained at the O‘ahu SHPD office, the DLNR Office of the Chairperson, as well as the Honolulu and neighbor island locations for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

Completed application forms and related documents must be received by SHPD by the end of business on March 11, 2005 for 2005 appointments. The O‘ahu SHPD office is located at 601 Kamokila Blvd, Room 555, Kapolei, Hawai‘i 96707. For further assistance, please call (808) 692-8015, or (808) 692-8020 via facsimile.
