WAILUKU — The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) invites the public to a meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday October 6, to discuss possible ways to address fishing related issues in Kahului Harbor. The meeting will take place at the Cameron Center, 95 Mahalani Street in Wailuku. Some of the issues to be discussed include restrictions on bait nets and throw nets, a ban on snagging fish, and the establishment of a check-in requirement for all fishers. “Although there are no proposed rules at this time for these issues, we are seeking public input on what, if any, recommendations are appropriate for the Kahului Harbor Fisheries Management Area administrative rules,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson. “We are trying to work with fishers to deal with the various fishing issues in the harbor. This is also in response to two bills passed during the last two sessions -- Act 218, SLH 2005 and Act 241, SLH 2006 -- which dealt with fishing in Kahului Harbor. The bills would prohibit net fishing in Kahului harbor, but will not take effect until July 2007, or until the department creates rules,” he said.
