Closes Pu'u O'o Trail for Safety Measures

Honolulu – The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) is announcing the closure of Pu‘u O‘o Trail on the Big Island. The trail is closed until further notice.

“Given the trail’s location and recent seismic activity of Kilauea, Hawai‘i County Civil Defense and the National Park Service – Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park contacted DLNR and recommended that the trail be closed,” said Allan Smith, Interim Chairperson of DLNR.

The Pu‘u O‘o Trail, within the Kahauale‘a Natural Area Reserve, is also commonly known as Kahauale‘a Trail and Captains Trail. The trail head is located on Volcano Road (Hwy 11) approximately at the 20 milemarker in Glenwood. A trail closure sign is posted at the trailhead.

For more information on the trail’s status contact DOFAW Hilo Office at 974-4221.
