Two Kona Coast Parks To Close Early On July 4

KONA — Two Kona coast state parks will close early on Wednesday, July 4, to reduce the chances of fire spreading from illegal fireworks. Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area and Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area will close at 6 p.m. instead of the usual 7 p.m. Kekaha Kai State Park is closed on Wednesdays.

"Use of fireworks in state parks and forest reserves is illegal," said Allan Smith, Department of Land and Natural Resources interim chairperson.

"During this very dry summer season, we need to be especially careful to avoid endangering our forest and coastal areas so we can enjoy their beauty for generations. We ask the public’s help to protect our natural areas," said Smith.

The regular park summer closing time of 7 p.m. will resume on Thursday, July 5.
