DLNR To Hold Public Information Meeting
On Makaua Stream Restoration Project

HONOLULU -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) invites the public to attend an informational meeting regarding the proposed restoration project in Makaua Stream in Ka‘a‘awa.

Makaua was one of the streams on Windward O‘ahu that was heavily damaged by the March 2006 storm.

The meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 8, 2007, at the Ka‘a‘awa Elementary School Cafeteria, 51-296 Kamehameha Highway.

Impacted residents adjacent to the stream are encouraged to attend, as important information will be discussed that will assist in moving this project forward.

“We are fortunate that federal funds have become available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service’s (NRCS) Emergency Watershed Protection Program. The State will partner with NRCS in this project that will remove debris and restore portions of the stream impacted by last year’s storm,” said Laura Thielen, DLNR interim chairperson.

Federal funds will finance 75% of the construction cost with the State paying the remaining 25%.

The project, currently in the planning stage, is scheduled to begin construction in summer 2008.
