LAHAINA — The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has completed construction of a new comfort station at the Lahaina Small Boat Harbor, which will open tomorrow for public use. “DLNR has worked with state and Maui County leaders, as well as key community groups to complete this important project. We are happy to dedicate this new, modern and larger building which will accommodate the needs of the increasing number of harbor users as well as residents and visitors in Lahaina town,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson. A dedication ceremony for the new comfort station was held today. Eric Hirano, engineering administrator for DLNR, as well as other staff from the department’s Engineering and Boating and Recreation Divisions participated in the dedication ceremony. Also attending were Former Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa, State Senator Rosalyn Baker, Rep. Angus McKelvey, Keoki Freeland, executive director of the Lahaina Restoration Foundation, representative for Mayor Charmaine Tavares, and representatives from Maui Master Builders and Design Consultant Mitsunaga and Associates, Inc. This project is part of the Lingle-Aiona administration’s ongoing commitment to improve small boat harbors and parks statewide. Construction began in September 2006 with demolition of the old 375 square foot comfort station. The new facility is a 1,200 square foot modern comfort station, with site landscaping, accessible ramps, and walkways, parking stalls, signage and utilities. In keeping with the historic character of Lahaina, design consultant Mitsunaga and Associates, Inc. designed the comfort station to resemble a plantation house, with green wooden siding and red corrugated metal roofing. The interior of the comfort station was designed to utilize modern building materials to minimize vandalism and reduce maintenance cost. The enlarged comfort station provides 5 sinks and 12 toilets on the women’s side; and 4 sinks, 2 urinals and 4 toilets on the men’s side. The landscaping design incorporated most of the existing palms and coconut palm trees, and the large kamani tree. It also included native plantings, which include naupaka, loulu palms, ti and dwarf lauae ferns. Project contractor was Maui Master Builders. Project cost was $1,340,205 for planning, design and construction. The project was funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Transit Administration and state funds. # # #
