HONOLULU - The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) today announced search committee members tasked with recruiting candidates to fill vacancies within the Department’s State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD). The search committee members include the Honorable Patrick K. S. L. Yim, Dr. Kū Kahakalau and Timothy Johns. “The State Historic Preservation Division plays a pivotal role in maintaining our state history and unique sense of place. We appreciate the time and expertise these respected leaders are volunteering to help the state reach out to the broader community to identify the qualities essential for successful leadership within SHPD,” said DLNR Chairperson Laura H. Thielen. Thielen formed the search committee following the recent resignation of the SHPD administrator. A temporary transition team is currently managing the division while the newly formed committee searches for a new administrator as well as branch chiefs for the division’s archaeological and history/culture branches. Committee members will meet with division staff, as well as cultural, archeological and historic preservation organizations to hear their ideas on the qualifications and support necessary to ensure the successful operation of Hawai‘i’s historic preservation program. They will consider all input, and then seek the best leadership. “The committee believes we must build on existing relationships and forge new ones in order for the state to succeed in meeting its mission to perpetuate our history and culture,” said the Honorable Patrick Yim, the search committee chairperson. “We believe this is the time for everyone to take a breath, reassess the potential and vision of the State Historic Preservation Division and the leadership qualities that are essential to reach those ambitious and important objectives,” The SHPD administrator is tasked with leading a comprehensive program of historic preservation at all levels of government to promote the use and conservation of land and other resources for the education, inspiration, pleasure, and enrichment of all of Hawai‘i’s citizens. The Honorable Patrick K. S. L. Yim is a retired judge for the First Circuit Court. During his 24 years on the bench, Judge Yim presided over hundreds of cases as a trial and settlement judge, in the areas of domestic relations, juvenile, criminal, civil, probate, trust and guardianship law. Since his retirement from the Judiciary, Judge Yim has devoted his judicial skills to alternative dispute resolution on a full-time basis as a mediator and arbitrator. Judge Yim is a legal advisor to the City & County of Honolulu’s Department of the Corporation Counsel, serves on the Appellate Alternative Dispute Resolution Program with the Judiciary and is a trustee for the Queen Lili‘uokalani Trust. Dr. Kū Kahakalau is a native Hawaiian practitioner, educator, researcher, songwriter, and expert in Hawaiian language, history and culture residing in Kukuihaele on the Island of Hawai‘i. A community activist for over 25 years, Dr. Kahakalau has been active in numerous Hawaiian grassroots issues including Kaho‘olawe and Wao Kele o Puna, and has been a member of the Hawai‘i Island Burial Council since 2004. As founder and president of the Kanu o ka ‘Āina Learning ‘Ohana, Dr. Kahakalau created and oversees innovative, community-based, family-oriented and culturally driven programs that serve thousands of native Hawaiians from infants to elders. Timothy Johns is the former chairperson of the Department of Land and Natural Resources and served as the deputy director to its Commission on Water Resources Management. He currently serves as the president, director and chief executive officer of the Bishop Museum. He is also a trustee for the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust and is an at-large member of the Board of Land and Natural Resources.
