LIHU‘E, KAUA‘I – Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) State Parks personnel discovered today that four portable toilets at Ha‘ena State Park were burned by vandals either Christmas Eve or morning. The park remains open, however the closest public toilets are at Ha‘ena Beach Park. “We are aware of the problem and are working to replace the portable toilets for public use tomorrow,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson. “It is Christmas vacation time, making this one of the heavy use periods by the public. Vandalism is senseless and costly, and takes away funds that could be used for other park improvements.” “We ask anyone who has information on who is responsible for this vandalism of public property to please contact our Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement Kaua‘i branch at 274-3521 or the Kaua‘i Police Department,” said Thielen. Garden Isle Portable Toilets will install three standard and one accessible portable toilets that should be ready for use around noon, Thursday, December 27. Construction began in October 2007 on a new comfort station at the park that will include accessible fixtures and facilities such as changing areas; accessible outdoor shower tree; new pathways and other related improvements. Work on the new comfort station foundation has been temporarily delayed due to the Department of Transportation’s emergency improvements to the Wainiha Bridge, which reduced the load limits from 6 tons to 3 tons. The contractor was unable to transport material across the bridge since October 26, 2007, but will resume work in early January 2008. The contractor for the comfort station replacement project is Colin & Dillon Construction, and work for that project is expected to be completed by July 2008. The project cost is $432,000. Ha‘ena State Park is located in northwest region of Kaua‘i at the end of Kuhio Highway (Hwy. 56). # # #
