greater amakihi

(Hemignathus sagittirostris)

Extinct

The Greater `Amakihi was similar in appearance to the common `Amakihi, but for a larger size (6 inches as compared to 4 inches), and a straight bill with a bluish tinge at the base.

It was found only on Hawai`i Island on the slopes of Mauna Kea above Hilo at an altitude of 500-1500 feet. Its range was very localized and in dense rainforest, so it was unknown to native Hawaiians. The last sighting was in 1901, and it is considered extinct.
