Black Mamo
(Drepanis funerea)

Extinct

Though the Hawai`i mamo was highly prized for its golden accent feathers, the hoa, or Black Mamo, was given the scientific name funerea because of its somber dull-black plumage. Like many other members of the honey creeper family, it was a nectar feeder, and had a long, curved bill to reach inside lobelia flowers. The hoa was found only on Moloka`i, was last seen in 1907, and is extinct.
