Hawaiian Rail
Extinct The moho, or Hawaiian rail, was the last remaining species of Hawaiian flightless birds. Because of the isolated geography, the fauna of the Hawaiian islands evolved free of predatory mammals. The need for wings to fly in escape became unnecessary, and certain birds gradually evolved to become flightless. Hawai`i also had large flightless geese and ducks. The arrival of the ancient Polynesians quickly brought about an end to most of the flightless species. Not only did humans kill and eat the large adult birds, but introduced predators such as dogs, pigs, and rats, predated upon the eggs and chicks, and smaller birds, such as the rail. |
