When it comes to the subject of natural environments, the Hawaiian Islands provide an incredible array of topics and stories. Though Hawai`i only encompasses .02% of the land mass of the United States, it ranks second only to California in the total number of native species, and first for the number of species that are threatened and endangered. Who are some of the agencies and people working towards these causes? Why should we care? Through reading and the arts, we begin to understand and appreciate our mutually dependent relationship with our environment: we are very much a part of the natural world. As knowledge invites questions and questions create issues, today's controversies suggest solutions - if we understand this relationship. This site offers to make the necessary introductions. Should any of these topics catch your interest, there are listings of other resources where more in-depth research can be pursued. Enjoy the journey! |
