up for the May 3rd First Friday, Papana
Group, a jazz ensemble from
the United States Air Force Band of
the Pacific - Hawai‘i will be featured
at this month's First Friday event.
The 17-piece United States Air Force
Band of the Pacific - Hawai‘i, led by
Chief Master Sergeant Laura C. Noel,
also a vocalist, travel and perform
their mission throughout the Pacific
region.

Tom "Pohaku"
Stone:
Traditional Surfboard-Shaping and
Sled Carving
Tuesday,
May 28 | 12 noon - 1:00 p.m.
Legendary waterman Tom "Pohaku"
Stone will share his knowledge
of the ocean and ancient Hawaiian
water sports. A professional surfer,
Stone will discuss his lifelong
education in traditional methods of
shaping and preserving watercraft
using ancient practices.
Stone is credited with single
handedly revitalizing the
centuries-old extreme sport of he‘e
holua or Hawaiian sledding. He
earned a master's degree in Pacific
Island Studies from the University of
Hawai‘i at Manoa and now shares his
knowledge of culture and craft by
instructing students in the ancient
arts of sled building and surfboard
carving.
