Exhibitions

Body of Work: Interpretations of the Human Form; accession: Recent Acquisitions from the Art in Public Places Collection; and Where We Live: Exhibitions currently on view at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum, No. 1 Capitol District Building, 2nd Floor, 250 South Hotel Street. Celebrating Hawai‘i with My Family and Friends. An annual student art exhibition featuring works by over 90 of Hawai‘i's best young artists from K-6. Presented by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, in partnership with the Department of Education and the Hawai‘i Tourism Association. On view through April 2014. Hawai‘i Convention Center, Children's Courtyard.

Lectures

Art Lunch at HiSAM: Traditional Surfboard-Shaping and Sled Carving. 
Legendary waterman Tom "Pohaku" Stone will share his knowledge of the ocean and ancient Hawaiian water sports. A professional surfer, Stone will discuss his lifelong education in traditional methods of shaping and preserving watercraft using ancient practices. Music

First Friday at HiSAM: Papana Group. The jazz ensemble from the United States Air Force Band of the Pacific - Hawai‘i will perform during this month's First Friday event. Chief Master Sergeant Laura C. Noel, a vocalist, leads this well-respected band and oversees the 17 band members are they travel and perform throughout the Pacific region. Scheduled May 3 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. The museum galleries will be open until 8:45 p.m. Hawai‘i State Art Museum, 2nd Floor, 250 S. Hotel Street. Free to the public.

Musical Theatre & Opera

The Hawai‘i Opera Theatre 2012 Season offers three performances at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Concert Hall. All performances have projected English subtitles. Workshops, Classes & Demonstrations

Second Saturday at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum: The Dimensions of Nature - 2D and 3D. Join Teaching Artists Liz Train and Marcia Pasqua as they guide you in an exploration of the artful side of nature, using inspirations from HiSAM gallery works by Satoru Abe. A free family event featuring hands-on arts activities and quick tours of the museum. Scheduled May 11, art galleries open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with art activities scheduled from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Hawai‘i State Art Museum, 250 S. Hotel St. Admission is free. ‘Ulu‘ulu: The Henry Ku‘ualoha Giugni Moving Image Archive of Hawai‘i. Join Janel Quirante, head archivist of the ‘Ulu‘ulu program; Heather Giugni, outreach consultant; and Chris Lee, project director; as they discuss the program and show how it can assist Hawai‘i artists, artist groups, and arts & cultural organizations that have documented and recorded artistci and cultural activities over the decades. Learn about basic care and preservation challenges in Hawai‘i for audiovisual materialsas well as resources for digitization. Scheduled June 4, from 10 a.m.-12 noon.
